Parenting Help - 9 Slip Ups to Avoid in Toddlerhood

The best parenting help in the world would be if each toddler came with an individual owner's manual to assist parents in the trying times of toddlerhood. Sure there is plenty of helpful advice out there from other moms and dads and professionals, but every child is different, with a different temperament so usually parents end up on a trial and error basis when using parenting help to assist in raising their toddler. Much of parenting is trial and error and not giving up until you find the help that works best for you and your toddler. A perfect example of this is a toddler's bedtime - getting them to go to bed without a fuss and remain in bed throughout the night.

This particular parenting help is to lend you a hand in avoiding the slips ups that end up slowing down our efforts and working against quicker successes. When dealing with toddlers, regardless of the technique you are using for whatever situations, avoid these nine slips ups to help your ride be a little less bumpy and support whatever technique you are using for whatever situation.

Slip Up #1: Not Enough One on One

Make no mistake that family time is important but be cautious not to go overboard but rather concentrate more on having one-on-one time with each child. Professionals have always stressed to parents how children, especially toddlers love one-on-one time with their parents.

Simply get on the floor with them and play. No distractions, no TV, no telephone calls - just you and your toddler. Let him see that at that time he is the only thing that matters.

Slip Up #2: Being Inconsistent

Engraving your toddlers life with consistency is what will award you with a more durable and agreeable toddler. Toddlers especially thrive when they know what to expect. Like a consistent bath time and bedtime, and even what to expect when they are not behaving.

The parenting help to assist in fixing this problem is to keep regular routines for your toddler. Have a system set up with your partner ahead of time that both of you will use when your toddler acts up. Make sure your caregiver adhere to the same system and make it clear that regardless of whether she agrees with it or not she must follow the same system as you and your partner. Systems will change and be revised as your toddler grows through the stages of childhood.

Slip Up # 3: Too Much Explaining

Dr. Phelan explains that at the time when a parent says "No" to something, and the toddler insists, and then parent begins to explain, once again why - this is what Dr. Phelan calls the talk-persuade-argue-yell-hit pattern. The argument goes back and forth with tears from the toddler and further agitation building in the parent.

Once you lay down the law avoid eye contact. If toddler disobeys, give a BRIEF verbal warning. If toddler persists then go into whatever consequence you decide to use for this type of misbehaving, such as time out or, some parents will simply ignore their toddlers continuous demand once they have already laid down the law. This is the what I use with my toddler and it works quite well. I say it once, if she argues, I give a brief verbal warning, if she continues I ignore her demands within the particular situation at hand. Remember that toddlers are not adults and are not able to grasp reasons for things so explaining is not accomplishing anything except frustration.

Slip up #4: Serving Only Toddler Foods or Favorite Foods

Feeding your toddler only fish sticks and fries or mac and cheese will prevent him from wanting to eat anything else. Doing this early on will cause you to have to break bad habits and enforce new ones which we all know is a tough task.

Encourage your toddler, as early on as possible, to eat grown up foods, healthy ones of course. If you do this early on you will find they are less reluctant to try new foods and will have a broad desire for different type foods.

Don't always fall prey to their, "I don't like it!" Introduce new foods one at a time, if they resist, wait a week and then try again with that same food. Toddlers who are conditioned to eat the same kiddie foods, will often say they don't like another food just because they don't want it but after a few tries they will usually go for it and thus broadening their scope of meals.

Picky eater toddlers are quite common so by introducing new foods at a regular pace you help them open up to different types and tastes of food. If they fight you, don't make a fuss and don't allow yourself to become a personal chef to your toddler as this will open a whole other can of worms you will have to deal with.

Slip Up #5: Lending Too Much Help

When you see your toddler taking time to do something or struggling a bit, think twice before you jump in and help. Constantly helping your toddler before you have given him a chance to succeed on his own is sending him a message that he is incompetent or incapable of doing something. You will also be interfering with their ability to become self-reliant.

Of course, there are times when a toddler does need help but give your toddler the chance to see it through on his own. When you do offer help, avoid completing the task for him. Only help a little and then allow him to continue on his own. Cheer your toddler on as he works at his task and encourage him not to give up. Children need to learn to endure struggle and persevere, an important parenting skill to start teaching during the toddler years.

Slip Up # 6: Potty Training Too Soon

Another very common slip up, parents inveigle their toddlers into potty training to soon. They tend to use harsh and abrupt reprimands which turn into a power struggle, putting a very negative, unhappy tone for their toddlers, which usually backfires and does not get the results they think it will. This type of behavior can easily cause the training to take even more time, making your toddler feel insecure and less likely to even attempt toilet use.

Parenting help says parents can set the tone for their toddler by introducing the toilet and briefly explaining what its use is. Consider showing your toddler how the toilet is used by using it yourself and he can watch. In good time your toddler will want to copy you, and at this point you can praise his wonderful new skill of using the toilet. Don't forget to introduce the skill of washing hands along with toilet so the two tasks become one complete measure.

Slip Up# 7: Big Kids Bed Too Soon

I have always been puzzled as to why this slip up is so common as well.A baby's crib not only keeps them safe but it also helps enforce good sleep and bedtime habits. Moving your child to a bed before he is ready will play havoc with his sleep patterns and put parents in a position of exhaustion when they find themselves in the position to lay in bed with their toddler until he falls asleep, or the other side of this picture is all too common which is toddlers waking in the middle of the night and climbing into bed with mom and dad.

When your toddler starts climbing out of his crib or asks for a real bed, this is the best time to begin the change from crib to bed. This usually comes between the ages of 2 to 3.

Slip Up #8: Allowing Too Much TV/Movie Time

Professionals will tell you that according to recent studies toddlers who watch too much TV often have glitches in their learning abilities later on. Too much TV also promotes laziness and you will find your toddler doesn't want to do anything else but watch TV. Watching too much television is also associated with overweight kids in childhood.

Instead of TV keep your toddler active by helping him use his imagination through pretend play, creative games, reading, outdoor activities. Talk to your toddler to promote language, verbal skills, and listening. The less TV time your toddler has the better.

Slip Up #9: Handling a Tantrum

Here is a parent's biggest nightmare, especially when it happens in public. Why? We feel judged and for whatever reason a toddler having a tantrum in public makes parents feel inadequate in their parenting, which is ridiculous because all toddlers have tantrums regardless of their mom and dad's parenting level.

There is no point in trying to talk your toddler out of his tantrum, and there is no point losing your temper because it only makes things worse and will make your toddler cry and scream even more. Remember it is your toddler who is most important and not people and their opinions. Not to mention most of these people have simply forgotten that they too were once in the same position as you, or they simply have not yet dealt with their child having a tantrum. Ignore the glares; don't even look around to see if anyone is looking at you. If someone has something to say put a smile on your face and ask them if they remember the days of toddlerhood. Then, take your toddler to a change of location away from the public eye and let the tantrum run its course. Once your toddler is finished his tantrum, give him a loving smile and hug and carry on with your day.

With this parenting help you now know 9 slips ups to avoid when traveling through the toddler years, helping to make parenting in toddlerhood a little less of a bumpy road and adding more value to your parenting skills.

The Perils of Wireless Networking

In November 2003, Toronto police arrested a man in an upscale residential neighborhood. They noticed his car driving slowly the wrong way down a one-way street. Upon stopping the car, the police discovered the driver naked from the waist down. What was he doing?

He was using his laptop to download and watch "kiddie" porn from the Internet! How? He was connecting to the internet using unprotected wireless systems in the houses near the road!

Here is the problem, if someone were to access the Internet and download illegal material, then disconnect and drive off; it would look like the homeowner did the downloading. How hard would it be to convince the FBI that you were a victim?

This is not the only time this has happened. In a recent interview, attorney Joseph Burton, of Duane Morris Law Firm, said, "Is it possible a home owner can be liable for a lack of security on a wireless network? Yes, if they are negligent in setting up security." (Richard Shim, CNET News.com).

According to research by the World Wide War Drive over 228,537 wireless access points were detected. Over 62% were totally open and unprotected! In San Antonio Texas, the percentage of unprotected networks is slightly higher.

Some wireless access points can extend their coverage over 300 feet from the unit. Sure, the farther away, the slower the connection, but even one mbps is faster than a dialup connection. Add that to being untraceable and you have a pervert's heaven!

Having a wireless network connection is a great thing; the freedom it gives you is priceless. With a few precautions, you can secure your wireless connection and surf the World Wide Web from the comfort of your easy chair, bed or backyard.

Conducting a casual site survey around your home will tell you a lot about your vulnerability. Do you live right up on the road? How far from your home, are your neighbors? How far does your signal carry from the wireless unit?

After answering these questions, you can proceed to securing the wireless network itself.

Unfortunately, consumer routers are shipped wide open. That is they have no preconfigured security. You, the homeowner, will have to configure the security setting yourself.

Your wireless router and network interface card (NIC) are the parts that actually talk to each other. Each of them has a MAC address. This is a unique number assigned to every NIC made, worldwide.

Using this MAC address, you set the router security to talk only to certain other MAC addresses. Therefore, if you have two laptops in your network, you add both MAC addresses to your router security setup and any other MAC addresses are blocked.

This security setup works well for keeping the average wireless user out of your system, but a competent hacker can bypass it. A technique called spoofing allows the hacker's computer to pretend to be one of your laptops and trick the system into letting him in.

To prevent this you would need to add additional layers of security. Keep in mind though, every additional layer of security adds to the burden of your network. It slows things down.
Litigation seems to be a national past time these days. Protect yourself and your family by taking some of the precautions listed above. If you feel you need the extra protection offered by WEP or another encryption scheme contact your locate computer technician and have him configure it for you.

This is an especially important decision for those who run their own business and use wireless products. How angry would your customer's be if someone stole their information off your network and used it to open accounts in their name?

Identity Theft is only one possible outcome, if your network contains patient data you could be in violation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Then you would be dealing with the federal government!

Take the time to protect yourself and your family. Security does take a little time, but it could save you many problems down the road.

Baby's First Haircut

As your precious baby grows, so does her hair. Her once barely-there wispy hair will start getting longer and thicker and may even take a different color! This is the day you have long been hoping for: when people will finally stop asking you what your baldy little boy's name is!

However, as your baby's hair grows, it will inevitably get in the way. You will notice this most during meal times, when you will find her food mysteriously perched atop her head. This just means it's time for your baby's first haircut.

Generally speaking, there is no "right time" or "right age" for getting your baby's first haircut. Just check if the hair is in her eyes, fuzzy, getting frayed on the ends or bothering her on the back of her neck. Whether you choose to bravely do it yourself or leave it to the professionals, your baby's first haircut is a momentous occasion. Of course, it's her first foray into the mad, mad world of beauty (women, we all know this place)!

While you are free to do it yourself as long as you are extremely careful, you may also consider getting the experts to do it for you. Try looking for a salon that specializes in cutting hair for children. Sure, your baby's hair may be getting longer, but it's still far too short to warrant a "professional" cut. However, starting her early in this tricky haircutting game will prove to be advantageous later on. As your baby gets used to the experience, you are likely to avoid the frenzy that often precedes any toddler's trip to the salon. These salons often have fun chairs, baby items and entertaining kiddie videos beaming right in front of her to keep her distracted. Plus, the hairdressers are trained to work fast so your baby is in and out of the chair as quickly as possible.

If you can, visit the salon with your baby before the haircut appointment just so she becomes familiar with the sights and sounds and knows what to expect. Perhaps introduce the hairdresser to her and show her the comb, spray bottle, cape.

Then on haircut day, bring snacks, special treats, small toys-all the baby items that can keep her occupied. Depending on your child's age, have her on your lap during the cut, or make sure you are close enough for her to see you. Otherwise, all the strange people snapping away with strange sharp things in their hands might scare her! Then if she gets through it well-behaved, go ahead and shower her with some baby gifts. These can encourage her to behave herself again on your next trip to the salon!

You want your little princess to be at her prettiest, so decide on the hairstyle you want for her. But do consider your lifestyle and her habits. If you have all the time in the world to style her every day and if she doesn't mind having hair accessories on her, then maybe just a little trim is needed. But if you are a busy momma, perhaps a wash-and-go cut that is still adorable is best.

Although, you can still prettify your baby with hair accessories, even if she has short hair. But this one here is tricky too. We know all to well that a lot of hair accessories out there do not perform as well for our babies as we hope. So be sure to choose ones that are not too tight that they tug at her hair, nor too loose that they keep slipping. There are hair clips that are lined with velvet to make them non-slip. Plus, they come in the cutest styles!

Another factor in choosing hair accessories is their weight. You know how babies get easily irritated when we try to put stuff on them! These hair clips have to be light weight so that your baby doesn't even notice that they're on her head. Ha! Points for the moms...

After the hopefully not-so-dramatic first haircut, maintain her pretty locks of hair by using shampoos especially formulated for babies. Tear-free shampoos are the way to go. Lastly, remember that you don't need to wash your baby's hair every day. Twice a week is good enough, unless she manages to get paint or glue or gum on her hair (again).

Wacky Water Games For Your Kids party

Jacuzzi

Set up a kiddie pool and fill with bubble solution. Supply kids with an assortment of bubble blowers. Stretched coat hangers are ideal for giant bubbles. Let each child stand in the middle of the whirlpool bath in a Hula Hoop. Drag the clip above to create a mega-bubble with the child in it!

Cold potato salad

Have players stand or sit in a circle outside. A water balloon is passed from player to player. However, the balloon is not passedaround the circle as in the traditional "hot potato". It is thrown across the circle from player to player. If a player fails to catch the balloon, or it breaks, if he or she tries to catch him, is that players from.

If a player deliberately make throwing the balloon difficult to explode in the hands of strangers, he or she as an "out". Older children can spread further if necessary. The game continues until it is dry one person left.

This can be played with a net or simply pace off a distance between opposing teams. Kids volley back and forth until someone misses and the balloon breaks. This gives the other team a point.

For small children, use a sheet or blanket instead of towels. Divide into two teams and have each child hold the edge of one of the leaves. Volley, one of the teams to miss.

WATER BRIGADE

Divide players into two or more teamsof 4-5 children. Place an empty bucket for each team about 25 yards away. Each team gets its own full bucket of water at the starting line. The goal of the game is to transfer water from the starting line to the finish line bucket, with whichever means available ...

The Exterminator must get rid of the ants by spraying them with his bottle of insecticide. When a player is sprayed, they must lay on the ground with arms and legs in the air - like a dead bug!

The other players rescue the dead ants and bring them back to life by carrying them by the arms and legs to one of the anthills. (While an ant rescue is taking place, the Exterminator cannot spray any of the rescuers.) Once placed on an anthill, the dead ants come back to life and can rejoin the game. This game can go on for quite awhile!

ICE CUBE MELT

Divide players into two teams and place them. The first player on each is given an ice cube. The child must try the ice cube between his hands as long as possible in order to melt it rub. If he or she gets too cold, the ice cube is passed to the next child in line. The first team to melt the ice cube wins.

At the starting signal, players must pick up as many ice cubes as they can and put them into their own buckets. The catch is that they must use only their feet. The player who collects the most ice cubes within a designated time period is the winner.
